Fatima
The city of Fatima is known worldwide for its Sanctuary and the history surrounding it. It is said that, between May and October 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children of Fatima on the 13th of each month in Cova da Iria. In one of the apparitions, she asked that a chapel be built on that site, around which the current Sanctuary would be built. For many years, it has become an important pilgrimage center, receiving more than five million visitors a year.
